My Mission

Meaningful Code: A Personal Definition

I see software engineering as many things.

In one sense, I see its result as utilitarian: software is a tool that helps an individual person, business, or organization accomplish tasks; the bottom line—it's useful and practical across a variety of domains.

In another sense, it's an arcane, almost magical skillset—a complex weaving of hieroglyphics and many small puzzles that integrate together to form a cohesive, functioning system or ecosystem. It's beautiful, in its own way.

In a third, near-to-one's-heart and inspired sense, I see software as an indispensable component in the vehicle of human progress, aiding the delivery of humanity's better future, a future where the negative aspects of our current human condition—war, disease, poverty, resource waste and depletion, educational inequality, to name a few—are minimized through the use of science and technology.

I am motivated by each of the aforementioned points, but it is this last point that really excites and drives me to do this type of work; software enables better living standards for everyone now, and into the future; this feels meaningful to me. I believe software does and will continue to play an integral part in the shaping of humanity towards a positive future.

Meaningful Web Development

Web development is my field of choice as a software engineer. Web applications—whose foundation, the internet, ushered us into the Information Age—play a vital role in bringing good into this world—in driving humanity forward. As discussed in the last section, I am driven to contribute to these types of personally meaningful applications. Below are some social impact and tech-for-good industries that I'd be excited to wake up every day and develop web applications for:

  • Medicine research and clinical applications
  • Fitness applications
  • Mental wellness applications
  • Science, engineering, and academic research applications
  • Space tech applications
  • Poverty alleviation applications
  • Civic and government improvement applications
  • Artificial intelligence and machine learning applications
  • Virtual reality applications
  • Augmented reality applications
  • Criminal justice applications
  • Education applications
  • Agriculture applications
  • Environmental sustainability applications
